A Great Weekend

This weekend was the Youth Evangelism Conference for the BGCT and since one of Shareen's best friends puts on this event we were invited with Backstage passes. We heard groups like KJ52, Barlow Girl and Tree 63 and worshipped with Big Daddy Weave. The best part was that Voddie Baucham preached on Friday night.

Let me give you a run down of the sermon. He starts by giving the illustration of a man purchasing a banana tree. As it is being rung up it says "Apple Tree" to which the clerk would not admit that it was a banana tree, even though it had bananas hanging from it. His point was that many Christians are walking around calling themselves Apple Trees while bananas are hanging from them. A great intro that inspired us all to make our calling and election sure.

He ended with a not so common ending for the YEC: no invitation. He said I am not going to call you down to the Magic space during a Magic time where you can say some Magic words. Spot on what we need to hear.

For those of you who do not realize it Christianity is more than a feeling. In fact Voddie said that we should not expect life to get better when we become a Christian, and a true Christian is fine with that. It could cost us our lives, and true Christian is fine with that. Great sermon. Great call to true faith. Great preacher.

No Invitation!!!! Circle the wagons the BGCT has been overrun by the Calvinists.

It is good to hear that YEC was much improved this year. They have been real stinkers the last several years. I think the low point came two years ago when they split the weekend with a True Love Waits rally that turned out to be a hijacking by some other ministry group. That was also the year that we suffered through the rambling musings of Steve Baldwin.

I'm interested in this whole "no invitation thing"....is it really to be seen as a calvanist thing or the new way of doing things?

No invitation or alter-call? Did he invite people to Christ, but not to the front of the church? He must be a hyper-Calvinist. It's just so rampant right now in Baptist life. We have to be on constant gaurd for this calcified tissue that's a threat to the Heart of a Baptist.

How could you say "spot on to what we need to hear"?

You need to go to the ER at the Center for Theological Research at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and have immediate open heart surgery lest you have a myocardial infarction.

You may also want to visit http://www.baptisttheology.org/documents/TheHeartofaBaptist.pdf and http://www.baptisttheology.org/ stat!

Whatever shall we do?

thank you for your lovely comments. I agree with JHP. 2004 was not our best year. But I keep trying and the Lord keeps blessing.
