A Quote from Baptist History

"For if Reason should go before, like an Usher to make way to Faith in Divine Mysteries, we should never believe. In many Divine Truths, the Schoolmen say well, Rationes præcedentes minuunt fidem, sed Rationes subsequentes augent sidem: Reasons going before Faith weaken Faith, but Reasons coming after Faith strengthen it."

Preface from The Orthodox Creed

Oooh, great quote. Thanks for posting it. Yes, I quite agree. Many of the truths of the Faith are beyond human understanding and most others are incomprehensible due to sin in the life of the individual. Only after one has encountered God in a personal relationship in Jesus Christ can the individual begin to access these truths of the Faith.

This limit to human reason prior to salvation is one of the main reasons why I reject apologetics and reasoned arguments in order to evangelize. The Church has not really had much success along these lines. Go for what works. Introduce people to God in Christ and the reasoned arguments will be a lot easier for them to comprehend.

Nice post, it seems kind of like "reason", at least for some folks, stands as the doorway into an agenda; a personal agenda of their own leading and desires. In a way it's like reading into a text what one desires instead what the text desires of the reader.

Much like St. Augustine: "I believe, therefore I understand." Good quote, Madison.
